I-94 Westbound Lane Reconfiguration

Structural, Survey, Transportation | Wisconsin | Back

Challenge

Following the construction of the Marquette Interchange, WisDOT needed to add a fourth lane to a 2.6-mile stretch of westbound I-94 in Milwaukee County to alleviate congestion approaching the yet reconfigured stadium interchange. Kapur was tasked with finding a way to fit this additional through lane in a highly constrained corridor measuring only 45 to 48 feet wide.

Solution

Kapur led the design and plan preparation for the I-94 westbound restriping project, which involved pavement marking restriping of I-94 and I-794 westbound. Kapur’s design to add a fourth lane included 11-foot driving lanes, 2-foot shoulders, solid white pavement marking lines, and barrier wall reflectors. A crash investigation site was included to give vehicles in distress a safe place to maneuver from live traffic. To accommodate the design, median barriers were modified, and shoulders were reconstructed to carry truck traffic.

Results

The project reconfigured two existing entrance ramps, modified freeway lighting, milled and overlaid existing pavement, and altered four bridges, two sign structures, drainage structures, and FTMS facilities. The project was successfully submitted with only fourth months between conceptual and final design.
